Leaflet.js
While going back through stuff from this quarter I found that in the build folder of Leaflet there is a build.html file that has several selectable options. Some how none of us noticed this before. But it looks as though some of the options could be very useful in the future…
…if I ever want a map….
…on a website….
…that I can locate stuff with.
Eff You JavaScript
I have spent the last hour trying to get my website back from a JavaScript disaster.
Evidently if you don’t put JavaScript in the right way it can make your whole website disappear and do all sorts of funky things. Awesome. I some how have recovered it and will continue working.
I have it back now, finally, and I am looking it over. There’s a lot of minor things that I need to clean up with it, but it is looking more like a website.
Thursday Update
I stayed up late last night trying to get the final website I have been working on to go online which I could not do. This morning I tried it and it worked without a problem. I guess there was some sort of 24 hour delay on being able to upload content. But anyways, this morning was a major step in the right direction.
Right now it is Thursday night and I am currently putting all my content onto the website. I have it pretty well organized I think. The one problem that I am running into is that I know I am forgetting stuff, because I keep looking through things and finding more stuff to add to it. I am going to get as much done as I can tonight and keep updating it tomorrow until I have a final product that I feel is complete. I really could use the weekend to keep going through stuff and fixing it, I keep finding things that need to be fixed.
Late Night
I stayed up late tonight putting together and organizing all the stuff that I want to put on my final website. I have broken it down into sections, but they still seem very cluttered and somewhat unorganized. There is a lot of info that I would like to share from this quarter and am still working on how I would like to present it.
Tuesday
Yesterday I finally got a website hosted and up and running using a template. I worked on one earlier in the quarter using skeleton. I decided to do this one this way because I figured it would be more relevant to what I would be using when I start working. Also, for what I need to get done it will be quicker and easier for me to manage. I have never designed a website before from using a template so it will be a new learning experience for me.
I’m still putting together a list of things that I will be linking to, but I have a pretty good idea of how it is going to go together. I’m actually pretty excited for this project, because I have had quite a few friends who work with computers show interest in some of the stuff that we are using. I see this as an opportunity to display projects and educate them on some of the websites and software that we have used this quarter.
What I hope the finished product will be is something with as much information as I can dig up from this quarter. I would like it to be organized in sections, and easy to navigate. I’m not going for anything too complex, I like to keep things simple and easy to use. Another idea that I had today is to do a slide show that shows off some of the screen captures that I have used on Tumblr during this quarter.
I will post a link to the website later when I get more done.
I just created animated Hello World text with that Vectorian Giotto software!!!
I tried to take the best screen shot that I could with it.
I have no idea how I would get this to work on a webpage, but it is very exciting.
Off to the left of the screen you can see the list of preset animations you can select from. This seems to be very close to Processing.js that we worked on earlier in the quarter.
Monday
This weekend I worked a lot on the phone apps project. I worked on the first 4 chapters of the Apps Pro book that I bought last week. The project involved making an app to keep track of your tasks. I actually found this to be very useful and helpful to learning how to build phone apps. I found myself struggling quite a bit with learning phone apps, so that was the main reason I bought the book. I have taken several screen shots of the progression of my phone app which I will be posting later when I have it completed. This little project actually wound up eating a lot of time this weekend. The rest of the week, I will spend organizing all the stuff that I have done this quarter and putting it together to show what I have done. One of the tricky things that I found is I have worked on a lot of bits and pieces of stuff and putting together into one display piece will prove to be very tricky. I have also spent a lot of time reading bits and pieces of things that I have used as resources. As of right now, I feel as though I have done 16 credits worth of work when compared with other classes I have taken at Evergreen, the complicated part is organizing it into showing that I have done 16 credits worth of work.
On a side not I found an open source software called Vectorian Giotto. It is used for creating flash animation. I haven’t had time to play around with it much, I just made a couple of shapes with it. But I think that this might be something interesting to play around with in the future. It looks like once you know what you are doing it could be a pretty powerful tool for creating nice looking animations to a webpage.
Applying what I learn outside of class!
One of the important things that I want to take away from the class is the ability to put it to work for me outside of Evergreen. I think that having an understanding of what goes into designing a website is very important in today’s world, especially when dealing with business, which was my area of study at SPSCC and continued at Evergreen. One of the extra projects that I took on this quarter involved updating the website for CrossFit Olympia. This project was a good learning exercise in how to maintain an up-to-date blog. I learned how to apply images, make the images enlarge when clicked, along with formatting text to be eye pleasing and organized. I also looked into the other features that the website offered and found it to be very similar to Drupal and put together in a more simple way.
During this time also, they have been working on a redesign of their current website. So, I got the chance to sit through a couple of design meetings with them. One of the things that I have been doing is trying to come up with ideas or features for the new website. This week we are currently working on Apps, so I decided to see what kind of Apps are out there for CrossFit. I found one that I liked called XFit PR. The neat thing about this App is that you can setup an RSS feed on your website which then will put the information from the workout on your phone. I am going to talk to the web designers tonight about putting an RSS feed in there and see what they think about the idea. I understand it a little bit better now after Seth explained it to me, but I still need to do some reading about it.
So today I went to Barnes and Noble to see if they had any helpful books on creating Android web apps. While I was at Barnes and Noble, I found a lot of other books that looked interesting dealing with Android development, however the one I bought seemed the most relevant. Pro Android Web Apps: Develop for Android Using HTML5, CSS3 & JavaScript by Damon Oehlman and Sebastien Blanc. This book also includes a section on PhoneGap, using Eclipse, and many other things that I found relevant to what we are learning. I’ll be spending the rest of today reading this and following along in the tutorials that it has.
